Kuen Hof

KUEN HOF  Peter & Brigitte Pliger
Kuen Hof, owned by Peter and Brigitte Pliger, has been in Peter’s family for four generations and its origins date back to the 12th Century. The Pligers began producing their own wine in 1990 up until which time all the grapes were conferred to the nearby Abbazia di Novacella (Neustift Abbey). The vineyards are located in South Tyrol in Val d’Isarco (Eistacktal) just south of Bressanone (Brixen) and a stones throw from Austria (30 miles).  Ranging from 1,800 to 2,300 feet (500-750 meters) in altitude the 15 acres (6 hectares) of terraced vineyards are comprised of schist, quartz phyllite, stones and morainic layers of crushed rock. The vineyards are exposed to the south-east and the steep, historic terraces are sustained by dry stone walls.  “Heroic vine growing” is the term here.  In fact, the highest plot “Lahner” derives from the word “frana”, Italian for landslide and was recovered from an old abandoned vineyard.
A strong belief in a balanced symbiosis between man, cultivated plants and nature forms the backbone of Peter and Brigitte’s lifestyle and their winegrowing philosophy.  Coupled with the extreme mountain climate, great terroir and precise winemaking the Pligers craft very fresh and distinctive versions of Gruener Veltliner, Sylvaner and Riesling all of which are characterized by extremely long finishes and sharp sapidity.  The wines are all closed with screw caps which, Peter reassures, allows for proper storage without compromising aging capacity.
