COLLESTEFANO  Fabio Marchionni
ColleStefano is located in the vicinity of the small town of Castelrainmondo near Matelica in the Camerino Valley of the Marche at an altitude of 1,750 feet (450 meters). The winery was started in 1998 when Fabio Marchionni took over the estate from his father after earning his degree in Enology and following an apprenticeship with a winery in Germany. Organic farming has always been a way of life for the Marchionni family and their vineyards have been certified organic since 1995. Fabio is a quiet, unassuming person and is fast to point out that a good wine is made from good grapes, thus his meticulous care in the vineyard (working sustainably, low yields, hand harvesting), and also in the winery. Verdicchio di Matellica ColleStefano is a blend of the various parcels of Verdicchio owned by the estate, each one having its say in the final result. Fabio feels that the Verdicchio varietal best expresses itself following fermentation and maturing in stainless steel, thus his wines see no oak. Perhaps the more commonly known wines made from the Verdicchio varietal are in the Castelli di Jesi appellation near Ancona and the Adriatic Sea, but the wines from Matelica enjoy a continental climate and higher elevation which yields elegant, mineral wines which are making a name for themselves as of late. One of the driving forces behind Matelica's push to prominence is ColleStefano’s Verdicchio di Matelica.
